LG Cookie GS290 Fresh Review

The LG GS290 Cookie Fresh  is a compact, lightweight handset, measuring in at 108 x 53 x 12.5mm and weighing just 89g. To achieve this rather low weight, LG have used some light, flexible plastics in the construction of the phone, which means the device clearly presents as a budget handset, but in the hand doesn’t feel too bad due to the nice smooth finish and curved edge design. The quad band GSM device sports a rather impressive 3.0 inch TFT resistive touchscreen, supporting up to 256,000 colours and with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels, not too shabby for a handset of this grade. The device has a flash based user interface, with cartoon style graphics, further cementing its appeal to the target audience. In use the UI doesn’t present any major issues, and even novice mobile phone users will soon pick up the ways of the GS290. Included in the UI is support for gesture shortcuts, and there is a built in accelerometer for display auto rotation. The Cookie Fresh also allows handwriting recognition, thanks to the use of a resistive touchscreen.

Being a mid range budget handset, the feature set on the Cooke Fresh is decidedly light, particularly in the area of data connectivity. There is no HSDPA here, nor even 3G, and no WiFi either, all data on the handset is sent via GPRS or EDGE where supported. For local connectivity the device supports Bluetooth 2.1, and there is a MicroUSB data connector for connecting to a PC.

Music features well on the device; there is a 3.5mm audio output jack for use with your favourite headphones, as opposed to being stuck with the manufacturer provided headset. The music player supports popular formats including MP3, AAC and WMA, and there is ample storage space available, with the Cookie Fresh supporting MicroSD cards up to 16 GB in size. The layout of the music player is easily navigated, with all stored content accessible via various filters, including album, artist and genre, and you can also create your own playlists on the device too. The GS290 also offers a built in Stereo FM radio with RDS support, and there is also a built in antenna, so it is not necessary to have the headset plugged in to be able to listen to the radio.

The device comes with an integrated digital camera, a 2.0 megapixel camera with support for video recording. The images captured on the device are adequate, and is good enough for those moments when you don’t have a better camera to hand. Captured images can be sent via MMS picture messaging, and also email. The Cookie Fresh has support for multiple email accounts, and will also support push email too. Social networking access is an important option on devices that sell in this market segment, and the Cookie Fresh delivers tight integration with the popular services, as well as including a native Facebook client, making it easy to keep up to date with your contacts whilst away from a PC.
